Unless you are WINE, Age does NOT Matter : BEYOND THE SESSION

"I wanted to do this session to encourage anyone, every one, especially over a certain age, and never give up.⁣” - Helen

β€œMy mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was 31, she died of cancer 7 years later. I remember turning 57, I was with a bunch of girlfriends, and I said 'you know this is a special birthday for me because I never expected to last this long!' Because I made it longer than my mother did.⁣
And so I figure every year now, every day, every anniversary, every birthday is a gift from what my mother had. My mother never got this. ⁣
⁣
And I've always remembered something my grandma told me when I was just a little girl, never be ashamed of your age. I would like to inspire other's; I am proud to be 70! I made it!" ⁣

I am not one to make a habit out of bringing attention to or making comments on someone’s age in relation to an Intimate Portrait Experience. Hearing comments such as β€œwow, they look great for their age!” feels like a back handed compliment to me. β€œYou look great!” is a flattering compliment to receive but tacking on β€œβ€¦for your age” to the tail-end may backfire. This can be taken as a form of ageism, or β€œthe stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination against people on the basis of their age”.

Besides, aging can be a sensitive subject to some while others may embrace signs of aging. Nonetheless, be cognizant of ageism β€˜compliments’ and respectful of others’ feelings.

I feel it is relevant to the subjects story if THEY are telling it. Not my own words or injection of my perspective of their story. Helen, is one such subject, whom I had the privilege of photographing earlier this year (2021).
